Your examiners will expect you to have a knowledge to the impacts of extracting metals.

Pros And Cons

  • Pro: You get a useful product
  • Pro: Local people get jobs and this brings money to the local economy improving services like transport and health

  • Noise
  • Loss of habitats

The Importance of Recycling

Mining and extraction of metals takes up a lot of energy – and often this energy is produced by the burning of fossil fuels. These fossil fuels are running out and when they are burnt they add to acid rain, global dimming and climate change.

Recycling uses much less energy (e.g. recycled copper only takes about 15% of the energy needed to extract new copper. It also saves lots of money!

Another benefit is that metal resources are limited – so recycling is really necessary!

Lastly recycling cuts down on the amount of waste produced. Landfills around the country take up loads of space and pollute their surrounding areas!
